Spotting a grave in Stratton churchyard, artist Philip Jackson was intrigued to read "John Ley Pethybridge - artist of this parish"
Unable to forget the headstone, or the unfamiliar name, Jackson was to find himself dragged into a fifteen year quest to unravel the fascinating, if tragic, history of another Cornish artist. John Ley Pethybridge's life, and his work, had been virtually forgotten for over a century.
Philip Jackson found his research so absorbing that he has included a permanent display of Pethybridge's original works and related items at the Stratton History Archive, which he runs as a hobby.
The book has 173 pages and is sumptuously illustrated throughout. Many original family documents, maps and photographs compliment Pethybridge's paintings, while the text gives a vivid account of the local history of Devon and Cornwall during the nineteenth century.
